My friends and family asked me what I wanted to do on my birthday and I said I wanted to share my book of poetry with you. This collection spans over twenty years of my writings!

My journey is here in these words – but I have hand selected the writings that would be most relevant and useful to you – that is why I called them Rants, Blessings & Dares instead of poems. They are less about my personal story and more focused on what I have learned and what I want to share with you. I imagine these being read at events, circles, gatherings, birthdays and in dark nights of the soul. They are designed to life the spirit!

Below you can read part of the introduction, read one of the most recent poems as well as take a peek at the Table of Contents.

Blessings upon you dear one,

Shiloh Sophia

From the Introduction of Tea with the Midnight Muse
by Shiloh Sophia

I am calling you. Mystics. Rebels. Revolutionaries. Dreamers. Visionaries. Dissidents. Wild Things. Cosmic Cowgirls and Colorful Women! I have a little something I would like to share with you, it’s called Tea with the Midnight Muse – herein lies the Invocations for Awakening.

I wrote these rants, blessings and dares over a period of twenty years as both personal healing remedies to light my own dark nights and to illumine the path of others whom I am called to serve. I call these Invocations because they are designed to summon or call forth. The meaning of invocation is to call, invoke, give, spell or pray.

My vision is to rouse the sleeping dreamer to action or stir the quiet activist to start a revolution or invite the Beloved to come or to incite the Muse to tea. This is a book of callings that speaks deeply to the psyche of women – although many men have loved these as well.

I long to provide both hope and inspiration. A kind and catalytic word to spark the soulfire within us to choose ourselves – and our own thoughts – and our own path. These words, when read with intention act not as spells to entice but more like magic words that breaks spells. The spells that bind us into doubt, not enoughness and fear of our own greatness. And most of all, overcoming a feeling of worthlessness. These writings assert that each of us has a call and needs to follow it and that each of us must do that. That is the only way to truly create healing, and ultimately sustainability in our world. By being awake to who we are and what we are here to cause and create. To know:

What is yours to do?!

As I write these words I am sitting by the sea on the morning of my 44th Birthday. The sun is just beginning to light the darkness and the moon shines in on me in a big white fluffy chair. I am home in myself, and this is the greatest gift of all.

I like it here on earth, in this body, in this time. As the writings will reveal it wasn’t always the way I wanted it to be – but I chose to make art out of it. I had tea with the Midnight Muse and she had her way with me and these poems are the result of that relationship with my inner essence.

What you have here are a collection of poems who have made a decision to be useful. They want to be ‘used’. To be read at the openings of circles, at workshops, before sleep at night, and upon rising. They want to be chanted like prayers over steaming cups of tea. They want to call your Muse herself from slumber and into action. They want to stir hope and inquiry and insight. To cause a thought that hasn’t been thought before to rise to the surface. These poems want you to be inspired to create poems and paintings yourself. Yes these poems of mine are ambitious to the point that they didn’t even want to be called poems, but rants, blessings and dares. They wan to incite action. Poems like paintings have a mind of their own and this body of work has ideas I know nothing about. I have no idea where they are going.

This collection has survived 7 editors and 7 years of wrangling into position. And it just so happens that there are 7 chapters of 7 poems each. When I first started work on the collection I thought it would be out in a month or two. Well. We all know how that went. A hard copy will be in its way by next year I hope, but in the mean time here is this copy – created in stardust and placed on the virtual altar for you.

The poem, Finding Wings is the oldest, She Danced is right in the middle and Witness is the most recent one from just the other day. While in café my fiancé Jonathan (soon to be husband) we often pause after reading Rumi or Jesus or Quantum Physics and write our own poetry – so Witness was the most recent creation.

Poetry has given my internal self a voice – she whom I call the Muse, and I dare say that this is life saving.

I dare to dream, dear reader, that you will find these poems helpful to you on your path. For certainly they have been helpful to me. The Chinese legend says that those who are supposed to meet are connected by an invisible red thread since before birth. If these poems have found their way into your hands and heart – then imagine I am tugging on the other side of the red thread that is this book, Tea with the Midnight Muse.

With great heart,

Shiloh Sophia

Witness

Inside of you
is radiant luminous code.
Ciphers ripe for deciphering.
This seeing is what I came here for.
Some might call me an artist,
and a poet if they favor me.
I am merely a witness
to your potential beauty.

Inside of you
stardust is begging the seams
to cross the veil of form.
Reach through
and take hold of the tail
of particle and wave
and pull it through to this place
where we hearts can witness you.

Inside of you
there is something sacred.
That which I call “content”
which belongs only to you, as you.
Sometimes you don’t see it,
I see it, we are all witness to it.
We have need for your gifts,
place them here on the altar.

Inside of you
there is a great longing to be seen
but only you can fill this longing.
We already see your radiance,
yet your longing persists.
Now you know you must see yourself
to be fully seen in the way you seek.
You are your own witness.
Inside of you
a great call is calling
a great wheel is turning, towards you.
That which is yours to do is at the threshold, ?
beckoning for you to witness with your yes.
There are many ways to say yes.
Here take this pen, this brush,
and give yourself
as a love offering to your own life.
