An Invitation – What to do on a day like today.
After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 “A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”
Dear Red Thread Community –
I am sharing with you, what I share with The Red Madonna Sisterhood this morning. If you want to add your prayers to our public prayer wall you can find it at https://www.facebook.com/theredthreadprayercircle
Good Morning Sisterhood,
I am sure, like myself, that it is hard to NOT think about what has happened in the past 24 hours with the harm being done to the innocents. This scripture above, not surprisingly came into my mind. I cannot help but think of how I started this month, of what came to me, that we too are under conquest. That the forms it takes look different than the inquisition or the conquistadors forcing us to convert or die. However. As positive as I am and as grateful as I am to wake each day – the reality of where we are as a people, the violence. The suffering. The needless harm caused. The feeling of isolation. All of it. I often feel like we are a people under attack. I follow the Women’s United Nations Report Network that sends out 8-10 emails a day – on the status of women worldwide. So, I am under no illusion about where we are – and in many ways – the statistics are getting worse.
I went shopping yesterday and was already at Safeway, I usually shop organic but it was in the same complex where I was. Everywhere I looked I could not bring myself to choose, the corn, the meat, the lettuce. I wasn’t sure. So I ended up at my store where I know there are no GMOs. It was as strange experience – and for me, when our food and water is poisoned it is an indication of where we are as a planet. For me, it is all connected. Alice Walker reminds us how strange it is that we need to be afraid of a glass of water. What is in it?
And so what is the reason for my writing today? An invitation to acknowledgement – of truly KNOWING and looking at where we are. Of seeing where you are with it. What is your response to it, and how do you navigate the knowing of it, the anger, the senselessness. We, as artists and poets, if we let it in, it informs our work. My suggestion, take it to the canvas, to the pen. Wherever you are. Consider taking it to the canvas. However your prayer comes out, let it come out. Do not hide this feeling away for a later time. Experience it and express it. Here is a writing I did about the earth a while back posted below- it allowed me to pour my feelings into poem. Perhaps you will be inspired to do the same. I am making my way to the easel. Lighting candles. Pouring tea.
I ask myself, and I am asking you. In what way are we being warned in a dream to protect ourselves and our children? What is our flight to Egypt? How do we proceed in faith and grace, in the wake of great tragedy? How do we BE with it?
In this season of nativity, I think of Mary now, having just given birth in a cave, her baby being worshipped by magic men, and then instead of going home to show her family her new baby-God, fleeing to a foreign country. And almost worse than that – knowing…Knowing the slaughter was intended for her baby. Imagine knowing the King of your country wanting to kill your child. I mention all of this so that we can continue to BE IN TOUCH with this season while we are going through what we are going through. It is not all jingle bells and reindeer. There is danger. And alertness is called for. I believe, and this is an opinion, that TRUE POSITIVITY can only come from KNOWING what is TRUE In our world. Otherwise it is not TRUE. We cannot not know what is happening around us, and be awake.
I ask myself what my intention for this post is, since I don’t intend to try to bring us around to hope or feeling better. Instead, an invitation to presence. TO seeking. And to connect with the Divine through our creations. Using our hands for healing. Adding our prayers to the altar of humanity. Feeling the love of our sisterhood.
I wish I could call a candlelight vigil in PERSON with each of you. But since I cannot. I call one tomorrow morning 9:30 am pst. Let us join together in vigil as a community. Each in our own homes. Together.
Loving you sisterhood of the Red Madonna. Tugging on the red thread with you.
Here is a possible method that I know helps and moves energy…
Art Project: To write down your thoughts as they are. Just pour them all out on paper. The anger, the rage, the fear, the sorrow. Then to rip up the papers and using varnish, put them on a canvas. Add some color to the varnish, let your muse choose what color. This will allow the words to show through and yet subdue them. Understand that through doing this you are in TOUCH with HOW you feel instead of stuffing these feelings. As you express them, know that you are releasing them from your body. They will be held in a different way and will empower you to navigate your experience in honesty with self. If you are inspired, then paint the anger, if you still feel like doing that, and then layer over that with YOUR LOVE. Then paint the peace, the solution. The energy of solution. IN this way we tend ourselves and hearts and bodies but we also send our prayers out into the universe to add to the weave of love. Care. Compassion. Love.
Red Alert from Planet Earth
Dear Precious Lady,
We need your light to shine on us right now.
We’ve got ourselves into some trouble here,
every footing we find is too slippery to stand.
We have dug – gone too far to stop it,
deep in the body of our blessed earth.
I know you can feel it in your own body.
Finally we know, if we didn’t before
that every single particle of love
and greed is connected to every single other part.
I know your Son told us that
but we are slow learners.
Do we know now who we are? Or not?
The balance of knowing and not knowing
keeps us in a taut tangle of ignorance. Ours.
There is no place I find I want my finger to point
Against another person place or thing.
There is no blame I find I want to place against anyone
but myself. While I am too busy making ends meet
others are meeting ends too sad for my feeble words.
Dear Precious Lady,
since I woke up with the spilling of oil and blood
in my heart. I didn’t know what else to do. But
write you. And do what my mama told me,
pray pray pray.
Some are calling for a miracle, a rescue mission
from on high. Some wait to die.
Like bird and fish who, slick with sorrow
meet their ends right now and tomorrow.
Will you let us go on this way until we compost ourselves?
That which was given as the blood of the earth
we have used to run machines which could have
run on light. On light!
Now, no solution in sight. (how do we stop the tragedy?)
Through all of this madness, there is a thought I cannot shake.
Though in my heart I try to shake it loose.
That we behave badly because we do not think we are loved.
That we behave badly because we do not accept forgiveness.
That we behave badly because we do not know what we do.
But we are loved. And we can be forgiven when we receive it.
And, we do know what to do, I think we do, do we?
We act in love, and not in harm and in each way that we are that way,
it will always be the right way. Right? But what do I know?
Right now, children are crying, micro-systems are dying
and macro-systems are sighing, heaving, heavily, choking.
And the shores where we once we sipped lemonade
and played volleyball barefooted and skipped along
in white sand,
are closed. And not for renovations.
And still I think we have a chance at goodness.
Hopelessly optimistic? yes. yes.
But the alternative to believing in the power of human
goodness and transformation is not something I care to
Help us remember Lady.
That we can choose good.
That we can choose to be a part of a divine connection
with all that is. (Can you get this memo to the front of the line?)
This morning, I gather myself up as a child
under the soft folds of
your garment and peek out at the world in wonder.
But thankfully, it is early,
and I have time to pull all my red threads
together and have one more cup of coffee
before women with paintbrushes in hand like magic wands
and poems to breath come knocking on my studio door for school.
Show us what to do.
